Mountain State Field Target Association

Match Rules and Regulations

  1. Safety First.  Always keep airgun muzzles pointed in a safe direction while inside the shooting box, or otherwise, preparing to address the lane.  Be aware of the competitors, and their position in respect to yours, to your right and to your left.

  1. Scorecards will indicate your starting lane.  Lanes are to be shot in order, 1 through 8, and 1 through 10,  moving to the shooters left on A&B until the turn around at Lane 8, and to the shooters right on C, until the turn-around at Lanes 10.

  1. When moving from lane to lane, walk carefully behind each lane, pausing if a competitor within a shooting box is preparing to engage a target.  Begin again, after the shot has been taken.

  1. Shoot targets near to far.  There are 16 targets on each 8-lane course and 20 targets on the 10-lance course.  Each target will be shot two (2) times, for a total of 32 shots (A & B) and 40 shots (C.)  Lanes have only 2 targets per lane.

  1. Lanes 4 (Course A), 7 (Course B) and 5 (Course C) are off-hand only lanes.  All targets must be shot in a standing position, for all Division participants.

  1. If it seems clear that a target has malfunctioned, call a “Cold Line” and ensure that the announcement is made to the right and to the left, with authority.  Or, request that the Range Safety Officer call a “Cold Line” thereby taking responsibility to ensure all shooting activity stops.

  1. Target malfunctions shall be investigated by the Match Director and/or, on-site individuals specifically assigned to this task by the Match Director.  Unless otherwise stated, no competitor shall move down range without first notifying the Match Director and/or the Range Safety Officer.

  1. When a cold line is called, due to a malfunctioning target or for any other reason, advise the range safety officer or the person calling “Cold Line” that you wish to first make your lane safe by discharging your airgun.  Once acknowledged for you to proceed, discharge your pellet down range and only within the boundaries of the lane you are addressing before acknowledging that it is safe.  Move your airgun off the shoulder, the scope away from the eye, and assume a “non-shooting” position, until the “Hot Line” signal is given.

  1. The shooter addressing the lane will reset his/her own targets, unless the shooter makes a request for assistance to reset a particular target or targets to his/her squad mates.

  1. If you wish to “blow off” a shot, or shots, advise the members of your squad of your intensions first.  An accidental discharge of air, or a discharge of air and pellet with the airgun in an unsafe, or non-firing position (airgun off the shoulder) will be counted as a miss, with a score of 0 given for that shot.

  1. Do not score yourself.  Check and sign your scorecard before turning it in.  Turn in scorecards at the sight-in range immediately after completing the match.

  1. Hunter Division – 12X Max scope; any rest, any position; no clicking elevation; no AO adjustment after “scope-to-eye” on the first lane, first target engaged by the Hunter division participant. Off-hand lanes apply to all Divisions.

  1. Awards - First through third in Open, Piston, Off-Hand, and Hunter classes, and an award for High Junior.  The highest overall score will be awarded first place in their respective class, and also be crowned the West Virginia State Champion.
    1. For Open, Piston, Off-Hand, and Hunter divisions, scoring will be an X for a falling target and a 0 for a non-falling target.  Scoring for Junior shooters will be a 2 for a falling target, a 1 for a hit, non-falling target, and a 0 for a missed non-falling target.  This scoring scale is indicated on each scorecard.
